Mary accepts briefs in a broad range of practice areas in civil law, public law, administrative law and summary crime.

She appears regularly in all Victorian Courts, the Federal Circuit Court, VCAT including the Review and Regulation List, Property List and Guardianship Administration List and the AAT on merits review cases and on judicial review matters in the Federal Circuit Court.

Mary accepts briefs to appear in regional and rural courts and interstate.

Mary has recently resumed practice as a Barrister after working with Victoria Police initially as an Advocate in the Licensing and Regulation Division, Civil Law Division of Victoria Police and later as Acting Principal Advocate in the Senior Advocacy Team, Legal and Specialist Prosecutions Branch where she undertook the following work:

  • Appearing on behalf of Victoria Police in subpoena disputes (oppressive/voluminous/legitimate forensic purpose/public interest immunity objections in a range of matters (sexual offences involving religious institutions, disciplinary matters involving police officers, active criminal investigations where parties were seeking police files prior to charges being laid);
  • Prosecution of summary criminal matters in the Magistrates Court of Victoria (e.g., dishonesty offences, intentionally/recklessly cause injuries);
  • Providing written advice regarding the impact of recent Victorian Supreme Court of Appeal decisions, family violence procedure, procedural fairness;
  • Drawing bail documents and appeared in judicial monitoring and other bail matters in the Supreme Court of Victoria;
  • appearances in the Review and Regulation List of VCAT in Freedom of Information matters, Private Security licencing, Firearm Protection Orders.
  • Advising and drafting section 49 Statements and submissions to VCAT in Review and Regulation cases;
  • Conducted matters and appeared in hearings before the Firearms Appeal Committee;
  • Advised on merits of reviews of administrative decisions, stay applications, jurisdiction and venue disputes.

Mary is a highly experienced advocate with extensive expertise in advocacy and litigation in the Victorian and Federal Court jurisdictions primarily in civil litigation.

Mary is a Nationally Accredited Mediator and accepts briefs as a Mediator in all areas.
