About Michelle

Michelle Jenkins enjoys a practice balancing public and administrative law and quasi-criminal matters, with the more specialised jurisdiction of the Family Division of the Children's Court of Victoria.

Michelle appears regularly both for and against government agencies and departments, as well as for private clients and legally aided clients.

Her public and administrative law experience includes:

  • Reviews of decisions under the National Disability Insurance Scheme in the Administrative Review Tribunal;
  • Royal commissions and inquiries, including briefs in:
    • Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse;
    • Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability; and
    • Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide;
    • Coronial inquests;
    • Subpoenas, public interest immunity and legal professional privilege;
    • Post sentence orders;
    • Disciplinary proceedings and regulatory prosecutions;
    • Migration;
    • Intervention orders;
    • VCAT residential tenancies and civil claims;
    • Applications for compensation under the Sentencing Act 1991, and applications and reviews for Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (now Financial Assistance Scheme);
    • Mental Health Tribunal advice and hearings.

Michelle is also passionate about her ongoing practice in the Family Division of the Children’s Court of Victoria and is convinced of the public importance and skills required of this niche area. Michelle has been a Committee member of Children’s Court Bar Association since 2020 and the Secretary since 2022.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Michelle was a Principal Solicitor at the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office, where she worked from 2008 to 2016. Her final year at VGSO was spent exclusively on the State Response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

From 2002 to 2008, Michelle worked as a solicitor in boutique private practice on a large variety of commercial litigation matters, with an emphasis on insolvency and contractual disputes.

Michelle was privileged to read with Ben Ihle KC, with the Honourable Justice Kerri Judd as her senior mentor.
