Janine Gleeson
Janine is a versatile and experienced barrister who has appeared in all Victorian state jurisdictions and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal during her 30-year career. She is practical and has a very hands-on approach to her work and is well known for her down to earth manner, common sense, and excellent results.
She enjoys all aspects of advocacy, particularly in the Magistrates’ Court where she regularly appears in public interest immunity matters, Open Courts Act matters, family violence and personal safety intervention order matters as well as general crime and traffic offences. She also appears on behalf of parties in inquests and in County Court pleas and appeals, including intervention order appeals.
In late 2012, she took a leave of absence from the Bar to take up her appointment as Deputy Public Interest Monitor. In this role, she appeared in respect of applications for coercive warrants and orders made by investigative bodies pursuant to the Public Interest Monitor Act (2011) (Vic). She returned to the Bar in early 2020.
Prior to joining the Bar, Janine was a senior prosecutor with Victoria Police.
From March 2021, Janine commenced co-authoring Summary Offences in Victoria, published by Thomson Reuters.
Janine edits the drug offences chapter in the Springvale Legal Service’s Lawyers Practice Manual (Victoria) as well as commentating on numerous other criminal law topics.
Michael Wilson
Michael’s practice is focused on criminal law and related areas, acting for both prosecution and defence. He has appeared in all Victorian jurisdictions and the High Court of Australia. He has appeared in numerous jury trials, both led and unled. From 2016 to 2020, he acted as junior counsel for the CDPP in numerous criminal appeals and proceedings relating to the activities of Nicola Gobbo as a registered police informer. Michael has drafted numerous written cases in the Court of Appeal on behalf of the OPP and the CDPP.
Jordana Cohen
Jordana Cohen practices in criminal law, accepting briefs to appear and advise in summary, indictable and appellate matters in the Magistrates’, County and Supreme Courts. Jordana also accepts briefs in administrative and quasi-criminal proceedings including post-sentence applications, disciplinary proceedings, royal commissions, coronial inquests and matters heard by the Mental Health Tribunal.
She is experienced in advising on and appearing in matters before the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal, or on appeals to VCAT.
Jordana has a particular interest in matters at the intersection of law and psychology where an understanding of mental or cognitive disorders and the mechanics of forensic risk assessment are critical.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Jordana practised as a criminal defence advocate with the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, and as a solicitor with the community legal centre Youthlaw.
Luke McPhie
Luke accepts briefs in criminal and quasi criminal matters in metropolitan and regional courts, as well as in family law, intervention orders, compensation orders, common law, litigation, VCAT proceedings and victims of crime assistance tribunal applications.
Luke has appeared as sole counsel and junior counsel in jury trials in the County Court.
Prior to coming to the bar, Luke worked as a solicitor advocate at two law firms, appearing regularly in metropolitan and regional courts and tribunals, and working in the civil litigation team.
Luke has a passion for advocacy and guiding clients through complex areas of law at difficult times. Luke encourages early briefing and communication with solicitors.
Liam McAuliffe
Liam practises in public and administrative law, common law, regulatory law, quasi-criminal and criminal law.
As a part of his mixed practice, Liam appears in coronial inquests, judicial review proceedings, public interest immunity matters, police torts matters as well as confidentiality and suppression order proceedings.
He maintains an appellate and trial practice in criminal law, particularly in complex matters involving white collar crime and corruption. Liam also has significant experience in matters under the Serious Offenders Act 2018, and under the Crimes Mental Impairment (Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997.
Jack Kelly
Jack practises in criminal and quasi-criminal law, including intervention orders. He appears in all Victorian Courts and tribunals.
He appears for both defence and prosecution in bail applications, contests, committals, pleas and appeals in the Magistrates’ and County Courts. He is experienced in sexual, family violence, drug, traffic, and property-related offending.
In addition to his criminal practice, Jack appears in proceedings brought by local councils, government agencies and regulators. He also accepts briefs for all stages of intervention order proceedings including appeals to the County Court. He has a special interest in sports law and welcomes briefs in this area.
Before joining the Bar, Jack was a Judges’ Associate in the criminal division of the County Court of Victoria; firstly, to His Honour Judge C Ryan and then Justin Hannebery KC.
Olive Go
Olive primarily practises in criminal law. She also accepts briefs in administrative law and in quasi-criminal law including regulatory matters, inquests and disciplinary tribunal proceedings. She appears almost daily in the Magistrates’ Court across all aspects of criminal law matters. She also appears in the County Court regularly and has appeared recently in a complex fraud trial (led).
Prior to joining the Bar, Olive was a Senior Federal Prosecutor. She worked at the CDPP for nearly eight years mainly as a solicitor advocate, in various crime types including fraud, bankruptcy, drug importations, money laundering, cybercrime, child exploitation, firearms trafficking, human trafficking and slavery.
Olive has also worked at Victoria Legal Aid, Office of the Police Ombudsman (SA) and the Department of Children and Families (NT) and in private practice. Additionally, she was a Judge’s Associate to former Chief Justice Brian Martin and Justice Barr of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory.
Caitrin Davis
Caitrin accepts briefs to appear and advise in criminal, quasi-criminal, and common law matters. She accepts written as well as advocacy briefs for both defence and prosecution, plaintiff and defendant.
Prior to being admitted to the Bar, Caitrin was in the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court of Victoria. She was a case management lawyer, assisting judicial officers in the management of indictable files, primarily murder and manslaughter, and associated applications. She was also Associate to the Honourable Justice Hollingworth, then principal judge of the Criminal Division.
